There is something to be said for how quickly blankets whip up in crochet. Our magnificent and wonderous crochet teacher Cyndy wrote up this pattern for a baby blanket using the squishable and anti-pilling Uptown Worsted~! Yarn: 8 balls of Uptown Worsted (100g/180yds); 1 each of 5 contrasting “polka dot” colours (in sample: blue, gold, orange, burgundy, dark grey), and 3 of the outside edge/border colour (in sample: light grey). You can substitute another worsted weight yarn to your preference.
Hook: US H8/5mm
Finished size: 30″ x 30″/76cm x 76cm for a 25-dot blanket
Pattern
Squares
Round 1: Using polka dot colour, make a magic ring. Chain 3 (counts here and throughout as dc) 11 dc into circle. Join to top of starting chain with ss. (12dc)
Round 2: Chain 3, dc in the same stitch. 2 dc in each stitch around. Join to the top of the chain with ss. (24dc)
Round 3: Chain 3, dc in the same stitch, dc in the next dc. *2 dc in the next dc, dc in the next dc* repeat around. Join to the top of the chain with ss. Fasten off. (36 dc)
Round 4: Join outer edge/border colour. Chain 1. Sc, hdc, dc, (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc), *dc, hdc, sc in the next 4 dc, hdc, dc, (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc)* repeat 2 more times, hdc, sc in the next 2 dc, join to the top of chain with ss.
Round 5: Chain 3, dc in the next 5 st, (2tr, ch 1, 2tr), *dc in the next 12, (2tr, ch1, 2tr)* repeat 2 more times, dc in the next 6 st, join to the top of the chain with ss.
Fasten off. Weave in ends.
Make 4 more squares with this polka dot colour. Make 5 squares each of the 4 remaining polka dot colours. This will give you 25 squares total. Arrange the squares in a pleasing pattern & whip stitch them together.
Border Using the border colour.
Round 1: With RS facing you, join yarn. Ch 1. Sc in each stitch around the entire blanket. 3 sc in each corner.
Round 2: Chain 3, dc in the back loop of each single crochet. (2 dc, ch1, 2 dc) in each corner. Join in the back loop of the top of the turning chain.
Repeat Round 2 two more times.
Round 5: ch 1 ss in the front loop of each stitch, including the chain in each corner.
Fasten off. Weave in ends. Give to an adorable baby!
